Police officers are £1,000s worse off than they were 10 years ago as a result of wages failing to keep pace with prices.
Sgts/PCs inflation-adjusted pay is £5,595 a year lower than a decade ago, according to a TUC report.
Jamie Thompson, Chair of Cheshire Police Federation, said: “It is no surprise that the monetary value of a decade of pay freezes is so high. It is something that we have raised every time we received a freeze or a below inflation pay award.
“We hear time and time again that the Government have invested in policing, but it is high time they pushed that investment to those who deliver policing as my members want to see support in their wage packets. Police pay received no uplift in 2021 which drops us even further behind in terms of the worth of our salary.
“The way police pay is negotiated needs a complete overhaul as the current system is not fit for purpose.”
